What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a small titanium screw placed into the jawbone as a permanent root for a replacement tooth. Once the bone has integrated around it — a process called osseointegration — a custom crown is attached on top, giving you a result that looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth.
Unlike dentures or bridges, an implant preserves the jawbone, does not involve grinding down adjacent teeth, and is designed to last for decades with proper care.
Who is a good candidate?
Most healthy adults with a missing or failing tooth can benefit from implants. Key requirements include:
- Sufficient bone volume (or willingness to consider a bone graft if needed)
- Healthy gums — any active gum disease is treated before implant placement
- No uncontrolled systemic conditions such as unmanaged diabetes
- Non-smokers, or light smokers willing to follow strict aftercare guidance
The only way to know for certain is a clinical assessment and, where necessary, a 3D cone-beam CT scan of your jaw. We carry out both at Studio Marcato.
The implant process step by step
- Assessment visit — clinical examination, X-ray or CBCT scan, full treatment plan and written cost estimate. No obligation.
- Implant placement (surgery day) — under local anaesthesia, the titanium fixture is placed into the bone. The procedure takes 30–60 minutes per implant. Flapless technique where indicated for faster recovery.
- Healing / osseointegration — 3–6 months depending on the site and bone quality. A healing cap protects the implant. Many patients wear a temporary restoration during this phase.
- Crown fitting — impressions are taken, a custom crown is fabricated, and the final restoration is attached. Adjustments made to ensure a perfect bite.
- Follow-up & maintenance — annual check-ups. We provide written aftercare instructions in English.
